Quando a Apple lançou o iPad, em janeiro de 2010, a ideia de entregar um dispositivo tão caro e frágil a uma criança descuidada parecia absurda. Muitos pais ainda temem deixar os pequenos mexeram em seus aparelhos, porém, com o desenvolvimento na resistência a impactos e maior popularização dos tablets, diversos aplicativos estão agora disponiveis para que as crianças brinquem, criem e aprendam.
Uma pesquisa realizada em julho pela Disney no Reino Unido ouviu 2 mil pais e mães britânicos e descobriu que 75% deles compartilha seus gadgets com os filhos, 56% baixaram algum aplicativo a pedido das crianças e 37% consideram esses programas parte "integral" da vida em família, segundo o Guardian. As funções dos apps para os pequenos são as mais variadas: desde jogos até livros eletrônicos de histórias, passando por desenhos e brincadeiras educativas com música, não faltam opções divertidas e educativas.
Como as gigantes Apple e Google não reúnem esses aplicativos em uma categoria infantil própria (eles estão espalhados pelas áreas de entretenimento, jogos, educação, livros), fica difícil descobrir o que é possível baixar nos tablets e smartphones para se divertir e interagir com as crianças. O Terra reuniu alguns apps em português gratuitos para ajudar os pais nessa tarefa.
