O Google anunciou dia 6 de Junho duas novidades principais na conferência sobre o Maps, seu serviço de mapas: uma versão em 3D para o Google Earth e uma versão off-line para o Maps.

Até o fim do ano, o Google espera que o recurso 3D já tenha atingido uma área com cerca de 300 milhões de pessoas.

Em poucas semanas, os mapas em terceira dimensão estarão disponíveis tanto para iOS como para Android.

Os mapas do Google Maps vão poder ser vistos off-line por aparelhos com Android. Bastará que o usuário selecione certa área, e o aplicativo vai informar quanto espaço o mapa daquela região ocupará no dispositivo.

Mesmo com esse recurso, o ponto azul que representa o usuário enquanto ele está se deslocando poderá ser usado se o aparelho tiver GPS.

Os anúncios do Google Maps ocorrem cinco dias antes da WWDC, conferência anual de desenvolvedores da Apple. Há especulações de que a Apple anunciará um serviço de mapas no evento.
