A robot equipped with a new type of touch sensor built to mimic a human finger tip is more of a new group of researchers from the Viterbi School of Engineering (University of Southern California) who have just published a study in the journal "Frontiers in Neurorobotics'.
This sensor - BioTac - can overcome the human finger in identifying a wide range of materials, according to their textures. The study paves the way for the development of a new generation of prosthetics and robots personal assistance.
The robotic finger using a new algorithm designed to make decisions about how to explore the outside world, imitating the human strategies. It is also capable of perceiving the thermal properties of the object. As a human finger, the BioTac has a 'skin' soft and flexible covering a filling liquid. It also has fingerprints, which increases their sensitivity to vibration.
As the finger slides over a certain texture, skin vibrates in a specific manner. These vibrations are detected by a hydrophone within the core, which is similar to the finger bone. The human finger uses vibrations to identify similar textures in this can be even more sensitive.
Built by the student Jeremy Fishel, the robot was 'trained' to grope 117 common materials such as fabrics, stationery, some food, hardware, among others. The facing material randomly, the robot identifies it correctly in 95 percent of occasions.
