Ele não queria sair da cama naquela manhã de Novembro em Portugal, muito menos para surfar, garantiu Garrett McNamara à Associated Press. O surfista havaiano, de 44 anos, já tinha levado alguns “caldos” enquanto surfava ondas enormes e estava magoado.

Ainda assim, McNamara foi para a água e apanhou a maior onda já surfada, segundo anúncio do Guinness World Records. Embora os cálculos iniciais indicassem uma onda de 27 metros, mais tarde a altura foi corrigida para 24 metros, quase 30 centímetros maior do que o recorde anterior, de 2008.

Um jet ski levou McNamara através da arrebentação na praia do Norte, litoral de Nazaré. A maioria das ondas daquele dia variou entre 15 e 18 metros.
